In light of a whole new world of automotive ingenuity, it appears it is now Lincoln’s turn to get in on the action. Earlier this week, the Lincoln Motor Company announced “ActiveGlide,” an all-new hands-free driving system which will soon debut on 2022 Lincoln models.

Building upon the luxury brand’s already impressive array of comprehensive driver-assist technology, ActiveGlide will allow for hands-free driving on certain sections of divided highways across the continent, which Lincoln calls “Hands-Free Blue Zones.”

The system works by incorporating a combination of key technologies, including cameras, radar, and driver-monitoring systems. Using these advanced features, Lincoln vehicles will soon be capable of traversing nearly 100,000 miles of pre-mapped roads throughout the U.S. and Canada without the need for manual steering.

To ensure maximum safety, the system can also monitor driver eye-gaze and head position via a driver-facing camera and instrument cluster in order to guarantee the driver’s eyes remain on the road in case of emergency.

ActiveGlide is expected to be available for purchase as an add-on software, which comes complete with a three-year service period. When the program is ready for launch via over-the-air software update in the second half of 2021, the price is expected to be around $600. The price of the hardware itself will likely vary by model and trim level.
